Week 3: Rocky River 34 – Trinity 14

Week 3 vs. Trinity
9/12/15

Players and coaches were looking to bounce back from a disappointing week 2 loss on a rare Saturday game day. As a staff we decided to keep our game week normal and were able to give the players an extra day off to rest their legs for the long haul. We looked to correct mistakes and improve our special teams. Trinity was 2-0 coming into the contest we knew they were going to be confident and have a little more motivation because it was their homecoming. We won the toss and deferred to the 2nd half and were able to force a 3 and out and get the ball back. Offensively the plan was to establish the run early and we were able to, marching down the field and scoring on our first possession and converting the 2 point conversion to take an 8-0 lead. The defense held strong and the 1st quarter ended 8-0.

The 2nd quarter was a little sloppy with the rain continuing and coming down harder. Turnovers and penalties gave Trinity the opportunity to get in the end zone, but we responded with two touchdowns of our own from Jack Corrigan receiving and Matt Popovich’s 2nd of the night. Eric Jones and Jack Rodgers added scores in the 2nd half to seal the win.

All night our Special teams exceled pinning Trinity inside the 20 on all the kick offs and pressuring the punter every time the Trojans had to punt forcing short kicks giving us great field position. Eric Jones got a big first down on a fake punt to keep a drive a live and was able to get a couple punts inside the 20. Our PAT unit was perfect on kicks and executed a 2 point conversion. Jack Rodgers added a touchdown off a blocked punt. Defensively we were solid against the run, but still need to improve. Matt Popovich had an interception and the defensive line was all over the quarterback picking up a few sacks in the process.

We travel to Vermillion this coming Friday on a short week. The Sailors are currently 2-1.
